Brethren: Raised by Wolves was one of those books that I was appalled at myself for reading, and yet couldn't put down. Not appalled by the subject matter, I should add, but by the melodramatic, soap-opera-ish, Twilight-esque treatment of it. I mean, gay pirates endlessly navel gazing about the meaning of life, love, and their emotionally scarring pasts while the ship apparently sails itself...really? Never mind the endless loop of: 'You can't be with me, I'll probably go mad and kill you!/Yeah but you're hot so I don't care.' Lash my hands and throw me overboard, but I'd have thought they'd have just vented it all by raiding something or dueling someone...

I finished this novel a good month ago, and knew I wanted to review it, but I was so blasted by it that I couldn't get my head together to do it. I think the writing and world building are fantastic, the characterizations fascinating, the whole… Read more
Brethren: Raised By Wolves, Volume One: 1 by W. A. Hoffman
I have to admit to two things up front, however unbelievable they seem: 1.) When I bought this, I had no idea it was slash and 2.) I somehow came to it via 'As Meat Loves Salt' and therefore actually thought it would be Literature. My first clue to my cluelessness was the biblio page, Wherein I discovered that it was self-published. Being a complete and unashamed literary snob, I generally avoid self-published books - the bad grammar/incorrect word usage/misspellings drive me insane. But since I'd already laid down my $10, I decided to give it a shot. Wherein I discovered two things: 1.) this was in no way going to be Literature, or indeed much a of a true historical novel and 2.) I was… Read more
