It's because the first three words that came to me, as I did a mini-rewind of the movie and the associated thoughts that were flashing inside my mind at that time, were: Gritty, Grim and Gory. Seriously! "A film that appears to be a science-fiction extravaganza suddenly becoming a horror movie" was epitomised by Alien [DVD] [1979]. But the concept of a person's inner fears, doubts and love coming back in material form to haunt that person was beautifully realised in Solaris [2003] [DVD]. This trilogy (which has already taken the shape of quadrilogy, courtesy the latest movie) deals with stuff which have been enumerated in the so-called title of my review. However, dismissing the films as sombre loners' "Transformers" or "Twilight" (gasp!) would be extremely uncharitable, since the films, esp. at the time of their release on screens, had packed a lot more punch than can be felt now. The first movie was ground-breaking in its way. The second movie was complex, adult (pretentiously) and faster-paced.
