On the one hand this belongs at the head of the great tradition of westerns - on the other with The Wire at the beginning of a new tradition of television mini-series (Boss, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, True Detective etc.). The writing is a peculiar delight and Ian McShane is utterly compelling.

Not only is every character really nice really (i.e. whilst it may appear at times that some are less than nice, it turns out in the end that they are all really nice really) - they are all really nice in exactly the same way. This doesn't allow for genuine drama - people who seemed a bit het up, unpleasant even, turn out to be perfectly agreeable and pleasant: phew. And its a celebration of tired values: there may well be more to being good than being nice.
