Needs an editor, with a strict sense of organization...Interesting, informative sections are mixed with rants about decadence, esp western vulgarity and barbarism, after a while it gets tiresome...I would have liked all the lyrical and charming info about tea in one section, and the angry diatribes in another, suitable for skipping....too bad, it gets tiresome...

marvellous, fantastic, one of the best fantasy series ever... great world-building, magnetic characters, delightful hero, interesting plot...just one problem....where is the ending?
I have read these many times, and i can imagine the possible ending, depending on whether one feels optimistic or pessimistic at the time...always a confrontation between the evil empire and the military genius of naga teot, against the back-drop of the local infighting and betrayals, but the number of tragedies/death/maimings could vary...i hope for a happy end, where all the good guys survive, and the dystopian past, the atomic war residues, are minimized and the local political intrigues are solved… Read more

I first read this when it was new, bought the second one in the series as soon as that was out...have kept them on my shelves through moves across continents and oceans...finally lost them in one such move, replaced them as i rebuilt my library...and i am still looking for the ending, the third in the trilogy...the characters are fascinating, the world is an intelligent mix of strands from japanese and chinese myths, histories and cultures, with some mountain and nomadic tribes adding interest...the main character is sympathetic, tortured, lovely and strong...the secondary characters charming and interesting...
