There's a good story here, but wrapped around with so much extra junk it almost gets lost at time. The author needs to learn the value of brevity and directness. Not everything long is good, some of this is just tedious. But the core story - good, exciting and just about worth the detour.

There are some good ideas in this book, but they are done no justice. The books structure, with its time shifts, is meandering. The characters are average and in many cases one dimensional, and the writing is weak. In particular it is subject to numerous grammatical wobbles and lapses of sense and discrimination. I lost count of how many times I saw the word 'dove' used - he dove into them. In particular the characters' emotions are flimsy and frequently expressed in cliches. Like a vampire killer who says 'Are you all right?' Or a dying man about to be turned by a vampire who says 'I cannot let you do this.' I wouldn't read another in this series, the flaws are the writer's own.
