5.0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable, 17 Jan 2014
I thought this was a highly enjoyable novel, laden with black humour and aiming its barbs fairly evenly at the insanely wealthy banking elite and the arts world as characterised by the somewhat improbable (but not too improbable) character of Artair McCleod. It is tremendously well done and Cartwright writes in a very lucid and readable style. The story with its interconnected subplots keeps the attention and I polished the book off in under 2 days.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for me, 15 Jan 2014
Whilst the evocation of civil war and post-civil war Spain is well done, and the book creates a convincing picture of Spain in that period, I found it rather lacking in subtlety and it failed to grip me. Although there are various time shifts, the overall structure is a solid linear narrative without much in the way of plot twists. There are a few of those towards the end, but I found them contrived and gratuitous. The storyline is largely predictable and the characters lack depth. Worst of all I found it remarkably hard to find any connection with the characters, and to be frank, if you don't care what happens to them, you don't much enjoy the read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing, 3 April 2012
I expected these pens (which seemed well priced) to be a bit better quality than this. The ink flow is frankly disappointing - writing is not a smooth experience, and the italic style of the point takes a bit of getting used to. If you like writing in an italic style this may be the thing for you, but to me the lack of smooth movement of pen over paper puts me off. Using the finer point results in a poor line and the italic ("thick") point is really a bit TOO thick and looks very heavy on the page.
