I've bought this book for several friends and relatives and will buy it for more. Every home should have a copy.

There have been other books about scandal in Hollywood, but few have bothered to put the hedonism of the stars into the context of Hollywood as a whole - a place and an industry built on a collision of great talent, popular taste, great beauty, astonishing greed, heartbreak and some very dubious business morality.

Right from the beginning of movies, there were vicious and sometimes violent rivalries, casting couch compromises, and brilliant, if totally amoral, entrepreneurs. Los Angeles was a movie town and if you were a star and found yourself in a spot of trouble (and many did), you didn't call the police. Oh, no. They don't make girls like Freda Kelly any more, and when Brian Epstein asked her to work for him with the very young Beatles, and then promoted her to be the Beatles Fan Club secretary, he was choosing a diamond. If you want to know what it was really like in the Beatles' Liverpool days this is the film for you. Both funny and moving, it tells a story of a different time and a terrific and scrupulously loyal young woman. Brilliant.
