5.0 out of 5 stars Strange and Beautiful, 1 Jan 2014
I've given this film 5 stars partially in an attempt to remedy the fact that the only current review has given it a frankly ridiculous 1 star rating, and partly because it is one of the most interesting movies I watched this year. It does need to be said that this film will not appeal to everyone- it is a deeply strange and not always pleasant experience. It is also exceptionally brave. Visually stunning and unapologetically ambiguous, Shane Carruth has done something truly original with the cinematic medium, and it deserves more than a 1 star amazon review.

Wow, it is rare for a film to stimulate such extreme reactions in audiences. There is no doubt, Malick is not for everyone. Personally, though I am not one of those who worships at the feet of the eternally enigmatic director, I do hold him in very high regard as one of the most significant American film makers of all time. Shopgirl [DVD] DVD ~ Steve Martin
Shopgirl [DVD] DVD ~ Steve Martin
Shopgirl is a very sweet film, though not in the nauseating Hollywood sense. It's far from perfect and the characters could be developed better, but despite this it is still enjoyable. Some may find the slow pace a bit of a drag, but its worth watching if only for the funny and ultimately charming Jeremy, played brilliantly by Jason Schwartzman. It doesnt play up to the usual conventions of romantic comedy, thankfully, and Claire Danes is likeable in the lead role. This is not your usual Steve Martin comedy: his character is understated, not necessarily the most likeable guy. But in my opinion it works! I watch this film when I'm feeling a bit down and have a lazy afternoon to spare.
