Stick Out Your Tongue by Ma Jian
It really does give you a sense of Ma Jian's feeling of the spiritual, cultural and personal loss that he obviously felt during his travels in tibet. Some of the details and experiences seem to be lifted straight from Red dust.
While Jian wants to make the point that Tibetans are not the idealised spiritual utopians that western culture imagines them to be, he puts this across almost exclusively with tales of sexual misconduct (not that I'm one to judge, but in Red Dust he seems constantly to be chatting to his friends while furtively glancing at their girlfriends breasts) from a boy sleeping with his mother to a female thief with a red hot bronze pillar up the vagina as divine… Read more
