I have been lucky enough to attend both a short and a full-day seminar with 'Coach Carl', and he remains one of the best teachers (in the fullest sense of the word) that I've encountered.
This book is a fantastic elaboration of the philosophy, movement principles and practices that I learned from him in those seminars. The term 'Freestyle' relates to the idea of practicing a variety of disciplines, in order to develop skills that are universally applicable, to help one reach specific goals. I bought this on the recommendation of Gray Cook, and am totally hooked.
As the title suggests, the idea is simple, and the arguments he makes for the simplicity are compelling. Pavel's writing style may not be for everyone - I like that his weight prescriptions are for either 'ladies' or 'gentlemen', and that outweighs , for me, being called 'sissy'.
The instructions are very clear, as are the photographs. I've never considered following a workout program from a book (or any other source) before now, but I can easily imagine doing this, not least because the simplicity of the routine makes for simple measuring of results.

I bought the book in the hope of getting more insight into the community building aspect of CrossFit. I've had some experience of the supportive, encouraging and empowering atmosphere of the CrossFit 'box', and was curious to learn why this seems to be so central to the CrossFit experience.
The first few chapters were what I was hoping for, focusing mostly on the personal experience of the author and her husband. From then on the case histories, as most of the chapters are, became less interesting for me, as there was less insight into why, and how, CrossFit seems to foster this community spirit.
To be fair, CrossFit is only in the subtitle, so I may have been expecting too much.
