There aren't many books about the Stasi so I was really keen when I came across this one. It mostly deals with the people affected by the Stasi (and therefore their account of the Stasi) although there are conversations with ex-Stasi but these fail to shed any real light on the Stasi. The people's stories are so compelling that I fail to see why the author keeps talking about the lino in every place / home she visits. One woman is pouring her heart out about something she clearly hasn't spoken to many people about (other than her therapist) and she is romanticising about the blue gas light in her boiler!
