I couldn't agree more with The Sunday Times - this is a wonderful blend of memoir, literary biography and a lively re-reading of one of my favourite classics. A book that not only brings Middlemarch to life in a new way but shows how books can shape, mould and speak to our lives.

I picked this up after reading the rave review in The Financial Times - the comparisons to The English Patient and classic war film got me interested. I have to say I devoured it - it's something new in war time fiction and definitely worth a look.

I must admit to being a little daunted by the size of this novel but the Booker nod and stream of rave reviews definitely intrigued. To reassure, this is great literary writing, but it is also an infectious page turner and one of the most enjoyable novels I've read in a long time. If it goes all the way with the Booker I wouldn't be at all surprised.
