If you look at various web sites and Amazon.com in the US for reviews of Dick's Picks, this volume is frequently praised. I agree! 2 Sugar Magnolia's(my preference is the 2nd) a really fine China Cat>Rider there is a beautiful US Blues. I know that the word beautiful isn't normally associated with such a good time bouncy Rock'n' Roll number but I think in this case it's justified. It seems to emerge out of a 23 minute jam which arose from a really good Weather Report Suite. Bob,Keith Billy and Phil start laying down the rhythm parts, it feels like they are all stage Right. Short pieces taken from talks given in the 1980's by Ajahn Sumedho. Clear and concise they make ideal readings for reflection, meditation or even could be read out as part of a Puja. Sound, basic Buddhism.

I have a lot of GD-all the studio albums (apart from Built to last) 1,2,3 from the vault, live dead, and several of Dick's Picks and The Download series, and Europe 72. There is no such thing as the perfect Dead album or gig-so many factors come into play, but for sheer quality of singing and playing- This is the one. Even songs I don't normally go for like Jack Straw or Bird Song are really well played and especially for Bob, well sung. I am left wondering why, when Jerry and Bob could sing perfectly well, they so often didn't. The playing is superb,together and coherent without ever being forced or tight.
