The Rough Guide to South America On a Budget by Rough Guides
I spent 3 months travelling through South America and found this guide very useful. I prefer the Rough Guide layout to any other guide books and this is easy to follow and covers all the essentials. I particularly like the 'treat yourself' boxes which are often very tempting after spending months in budget hostels.
There are also recommended itineraries which can help when you are making it up as you go along! I'd recommend this to anyone planning a backpacking trip in South America.
The Reapers: The Seventh Charlie Parker Thriller by John Connolly
If you like the Angel and Louis characters you will love this novel. It's focus is less on Charlie Parker as this novel follows Louis. We learn more about Louis's past, how he came to be a 'Reaper' and some about some of his terrifying old enemies. There are also some great secondary characters in this book who are really likeable and well developed.
I always enjoy John Connolly's books but I have to admit I liked the fact that there was less of a supernatural element in this one. It was fast paced and tense and would make a great movie! I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and stayed up much later than I should have on more than one evening as I couldn't put it down. The mystery unfolds gradually and I was kept guessing about the real truth behind Christine's situation right to the end.
The story is told from Christine's perspective and she describes her situation and experiences from the point of view of someone with no ability to store new memories. There are just enough questions to keep the reader intrigued without giving away too much. As a first novel, it is excellently written as well as being an imaginative idea. I highly recommend this book to readers looking to be absorbed from start to finish.
