I knew very little about Egyptian cuisine - and sadly this doesn't seem to be the book to really help me get a feel for it.

Yes, it is beautifully produced - elegant typography, arty photography - but the food almost seems secondary to the presentation.

Given that it is a cuisine that is going to be new to most readers, I would have anticipated a lot more photography of the actual dishes, with maybe some step-by-step guides. But no. The focus is all on the presentation and somewhat lacking on what cooks actually need.

I knew nothing of the book, the author or the surrounding hype - and no my reaction is in no way a response to that sort of hubbub. I just didn't get on with it.

I wasn't excited by the world or the events taking place - the construct just wasn't something that I bought into as a reader.

It is one of those frustrating things that readers sometimes find - you pick up a book and want to enjoy it only to find that it just doesn't work for you. There is nothing massively wrong… Read more
