Liszt: Complete Hungarian Rhapsodies ~ Michele Campanella

Even, consistent, revealing, and exhilarating playing of the Liszt rhapsodies,- more usually associated with mawkish melodrama and slapdash pyrotechnics. Clean legato playing sustains interest through the long expressive melodic lines while crisp technique overlays increasingly impossible embellishments. Meanwhile lesser themes casually meander through blissfully unaware. These multilayered, ever changing and evolving crescendi develope and tease until they cannot be halted any longer without a worthy finale,- and every one of them supplied with such skill as to appear almost casual- Almost!

First Off- This is not the Royal Ballet version
Second Off- Much of the music is not the Royal Ballet version.
Third Off- Much of the choreography is not the Royal Ballet version.
Fourth Off-Some characterisations are not like the Royal Ballet version.
HOWEVER, Do NOT be put off! This is a cracking ballet in its own right!
The dancing style is very much that of Bournonville. The dame is less pantomime than Ashton`s, and you won`t get THAT clog dance!- but you will be happy with the others.
Give this a try, and if you can watch and enjoy what you do see instead of what you expected to, I think you will find this ballet as charming as I do.

Two historic pieces from Sadlers Wells by Ninette de Valois.
Checkmate;- Filmed, as was common practice, in a full stage view with relatively few closeups- did it live up to the excitement of my past memories? Well, no,- but nothing ever does.Where was all the drama, all that stamping around, the dissonance of Bliss`s music, that feeling of uneasiness? Had it ever been there? Of course it had! I was the one who had moved on and become used to the speed and variety and divergence of dance. Watching again, I was drawn into the psychology of the game plan, and the treason!;- so despite the rather poor audio/transfer, I loved it!
