Dear Scarlett by Fleur Hitchcock
Dear Scarlett by Fleur Hitchcock
5.0 out of 5 stars A Marvellous Mystery, 3 July 2013
I wasn't sure about this at first. It looked a bit girly and I wasn't sure about the line illustrations running through the text. But I was soon into the story. It's a great yarn, a bit like an old-fashioned children's book. But not written in an old-fashioned style. Scarlett is certainly a contemporary heroine. The book has pace, scary villains, an unlikely friendship, a mysterious death, a mysterious key and a nail-biting climax. Oh, and lots of evocative smells. Ideal for children from about 8 upwards. I loved it.
Playing with Fire (Skulduggery Pleasant - book 2) by Derek Landy
3.0 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss, 3 July 2013
I loved the first book. A great idea. Told with lots of pace and bravado. Scary and thrilling by turns. So much so that I bought copies for my grandchildren. (10 - 12). But the second - this one - doesn't quite deliver for me. I found it all a bit - this happens, that happens, this happens - repetitive. They meet the baddies. There's a fight. They beat them. And this goes on right through the book. And the detailed fight scenes started getting a bit tedious, too. Even so, I'll probably read the next one. What's missing? Not sure. Still worth a read though.
Fizzlebert Stump and the Bearded Boy by A.F. Harrold
Jeremy Strong proclaims on the cover that the book is "stuffed with laughs." I don't know about you - but I've found that books which claim to be "hilarious" or "laugh out loud" very rarely, and disappointingly, are not. So I was pleasantly surprised to find myself laughing out loud, and even, on a couple of occasions, hilariously. It's a very satisfying story, well told. Not sure about the ending, mind. There was just one note that didn't quite ring true. But as other reviewers have noted - the style of writing is wonderful. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done, that bearded man!
