As usual, some people just don't get the fact that there is beauty in well-drawn despair. Reed can be guilty of the most self-consciously depressing drivel at his worst, but when he's on top of his game, he is the best rock poet of the dark side of the soul. With Berlin, all things came together to produce his most haunting, powerful, and consistently strong collection. Produced by Bob Ezrin (who also produced, IMHO, Alice Cooper's best album "Welcome To My Nightmare") with just the right mix of sensitivity and overblown bombast, as befits a rock epic.
