Rook is quite simply a beautiful novel. The story is a tapestry of rich , descriptive language and thoughtful research. The author explores human relationships, in the past and present, at times when relationships are at their most difficult.Birth, death, old age, break up- the threads are explored and exposed. I am still haunted by the central scene of the novel which moved me to tears. This book goes beyond pages- I want to know more about Cnut, Harold, Edith and the battle! And who think that a corvid could be such a compelling character?
An enthralling tale- I really cared about the characters and their intense relationships. The threads of the story were woven together so cleverly building to a thrilling climax. Jane Rusbridge has written a novel which has a central theme of knots, quite unique in my reading experience. Beautifully worded descriptions evoked strong nostalgia for the seaside holidays of my childhood. This is story telling at its best.
