The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng
The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng
4.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing story, 5 Nov 2013
At times dreamy and ethereal, but shot through with moments of horror, the book transports the reader to the misty hills of Malaya, at a time of violent upheaval.
It is a story of love and learning, evocatively described by Tan Twan Eng.
If the descriptive language is occasionally overdone, this is more than outweighed by the aptness and frequent beauty of the rest.

I'm not sure what attracted me to this book in the first place, and I don't usually choose a non-fiction book for bedtime reading.
But the way it is written - blending research and historical information with personal experience and opinion - made it so accessible, and so interesting that I found myself looking forward to reading the next chapter.
The concept of poorly planned and maintained estates putting unseen boundaries around the aspirations and opportunities of the already disadvantaged is one that we should all be mindful of, so well done Lynsey Hanley for laying out your case so effectively.

Hard to put down, especially later in the book.
Over enthusiastic use of description sometimes a distraction, but I would still recommend it as an exciting read.
