The Ghost House (The Annie Graham series - Book 1) by Helen Phifer

This is a good story, with well developed characters, some amusing dialogue; but oh dear, what really blew this for me was the poor - no make that complete lack of - editing. Random use of punctuation, short choppy sentences, irritating 'TM' symbols scattered throughout, confusing jumps between centuries/locations etc etc, suggests that editing wasn't something the author considered a neccessity. And whilst many people are clearly fine with this given the many 5 star reviews, I'm afraid I found myself mentally rewriting entire passages of text as I read this book to make sense of the narrative, which doesn't help the flow. 2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 22 July 2013
A slow and tedious read. I was very disappointed with this novel and wouldn't recommend it. I also found the use of Australian English phrases and terms destroyed my belief in the British characters - there's nothing worse than a poorly researched book masquerading as 'English' yet full of anachronisms (coveralls? Dusting cloth?). If you can't believe in the characters then where is the value of the book? The only reason I finished this book was to see if I had correctly guessed the ending - I had, and quite early… Read more

I really enjoyed this tale and the development of Gio and B's romance and relationship is really well played out. The story is expanding very well too, without it seeming to be 'looking around' for the next direction. Overall 'This same earth' was a great read and an excellent 'holiday' book.

BUT!!! The constant smirking, snickering and snorting that accompanies almost every conversation between Gio and B made it seem at times like I was reading a chapter in My Little Pony. It was sooooo irritating! It really let down an otherwise very well crafted and written story. Hunter has an excellent imagination regarding story telling but seemingly a limited knowledge of suitable… Read more
