It won't be to everyone's taste, but then that's not author Patey's goal. He wants to help 1,000 people who feel trapped by their job see that there is an alternative.

To throw in a job and then recruit clients, willing to see you infrequently as you tap away at their challenge in your favourite coffee shop is a high risk strategy. But then so is any venture into self employment. For the author it clearly worked and he tells you how you can make it work for you too.

Interviews with others living the same dream keep it real. Yes, you really can do this and many already do. It appeals; it works, but to me it's more a self financing gap year than model for a 40yr career… Read more

I read this book touring Cuba. Ernesto, our guide was in his mid 30s and has one child. He told me he and his wife plan to have another, but not yet, as they cannot afford it. In fact they'd sold their car to afford a flat; things are not easy here, even for the well educated.

And as Dorling explains in his book, birth rate is strongly influenced by economic success. If you're not making much money, you don't have so many kids. Life expectancy also matters; where death usually comes early, the urge to breed sooner is necessarily stronger. It all makes perfect sense.

This book is it has to be said a very fulfilling read. If you're wrestling with that common conundrum of balancing security and income with happiness and fulfilment you'll quickly see you're not unique. What's more you'll discover how we arrived at this place - where more of us dislike work than enjoy it.

Finally, Kznaric shows you how to discover your vocation - perhaps even your mojo!
