Here we have another instalment in the 'Warring states era of China' films.
Although it doesn't quite live up to its competitors in the field: Hero, Curse of the golden flower, Battle of wits or Banquet it is still in its own right a valid entry.
The plot of this film is a classic love story loosely set in the 5 Dynasty - 10 Kingdoms Period of ancient China. At times during the film it seems as if the director has forgoten whether he is trying to make an epic war film or a romantic comedy. And because of this it unfortunately fails to deliver on either levels.

This new edition to the horror genre has a simple plot delivered by decent acting and is topped off with very nice special effects.
The story of this film is nothing revolutionary to the horror genre. It's a typical plot of being haunted by a ghost, a ghost that has certain ties with the main character's family. As the film develops the plot thickens slightly but is never ground breaking.
The acting in this film is something that betters this simple plot. Odette Yustman plays the main character, which while at first may be mistaken for an eye candy role does sell the torment and grief of her character.

Being a true fan of the original monkey and having recently watched all 52 episodes, I was realy exited when this new film was released.
Reading the synopsis for the above product it read as if it was going to be a faithful remake of one of the original episodes - "Monkey Swallows the Universe". So from the film I was expecting all the old monkey magic anticts: daft but entertaining monkey, the greedy and lustful pigsy, the insesant babbling of sandy the philosophor and the wise words of Tripitaka.
Unforutunately this was not what was delivered: The film hardly follows the original and relies to much on special effects than comedy and originality.
