Whilst I loved he author's Direct Red and having heard his book discussed on Radio 4, I looked forward to reading this. However, despite the subject matter, this was strangely unemotional and not terribly thought provoking. I kept reading, but was not engrossed as I was with Direct Red.

Perhaps this is just not Anna del Conte's finest hour but having seen her referenced by Nigella Lawson many times, I had high expectations of both the prose and the recipes. It is fine, but not destined to be a favourite cookery book.

Put it this way, having finished this book about ten hours ago, writing this makes me feel choked up all over again. If you think you will like a book that takes you on an emotional roller coaster, feeling protective, indignant, appalled and in awe of the strength of character of a small kind boy, you will love this.
