I was looking forward to the second in this series but I really struggled with this story. I am also finding it hard to pin down exactly why. It feels like a series of 'events' more than a consistent 'story' and whilst there is some backstory to each character I didn't feel there was enough character development to help me to really 'connect' with the characters. I found about halfway through I just gave up caring what happened to them. I did finish it but it was a struggle.
I have read both of the Chronological Man books which were fun - sort of 'ripping yarns' and was interested to read more of this writers work, hence downloaded Angel Killer. So, attractive young female detective and mysterious male guardian, yep been there so many times, except... this one is genuinely different. The female lead is a complete professional, the mysterious guardian is creepy and the overall plot is clever and engaging. The term, 'I couldn't put the book down' is overused but can honestly say I read it from beginning to end in two days even missing my stop on the train..twice. Enjoyable easy to read adventure. This is the second in the series so don't start with this book. I like the characters and am intrigued by the sub plot that runs through the stories. My only plea to the author is not go down the 'will they won't they' road with the main characters - be radical and get them together! Will I buy the next in the series? Yes. It isn't an epic, it is good fun and a great read at the end of or better yet during a busy day.
