Mahler - Das Lied von der Erde ~ Gustav Mahler
5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime and matchless, 29 Nov 2013
In fifty years of concert-going I've only ever heard two live performances of this wonderful work that were truly great, and this was the better of the two. The performance constituted one of the high points of my musical life, with Janet Baker setting the standard that all other singers have to match or surpass, for her quietness and profound insight towards the end of Der Abschied were simply amazing. Naturally, what this disc cannot give you was her face and body-language on the night, but even so, it remains an invaluable record, and nobody can consider themselves a committed Mahlerian without having it in their library.

The writer of this note has been forced by Amazon's procedures to give the book one star, even though he has never seen it. It must be… Read more
