Workout Holiday [Limited Edition Remix] ~ White Denim

4.0 out of 5 stars Abducted by White Denim, 3 April 2010
Impulse buys that rock your world are so charged by that sheer sense of nexus, or seredipity, that they perhaps seem better than the sum of their parts, but this one has miraculous legs. Workout Holiday is a deranged hillbilly that ran screaming into my party, reeking of beer and workingmans' sweat, flung me over his shoulder and carried me away to the deep dark woods where an even better party was raging in his cabin. The beer is sweeter here and the music is like everything I like about punk, classic rock and weird indie-pop colliding at a monster truck rally.

This is pure genius from start to finish, would likely be even better on vinyl, where the track-by-track distinctions would melt even quicker and you could just get swept away by this torrent of roaring psychedelic goodness. The first three tracks are a succinct introduction to this records modus operandi; essentially a turbo-charging of the artists' previous acoustic-driven incarnation into a power-trio type unit, while retaining the delicacy of instrumentation that distinguished the picking on Voice of the Seven Woods. Fans of Ethan Miller and the extended Bay Area modern psych-rock famile should snort this up like a vigorous dose of beautiful salts, cleansing and liberating. As… Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Synergy Works!, 3 April 2010
Downloaded this because everytime I hear it I get a taste of the weirdly sexual, man-tastic adrenaline rush that i got from watching Miami Vice...if'n you didn't see it, avoided it out of eighties aversion or Farrel-antipathy, the movie just STARTS, no credits or titles or scene-setting, Michael Mann just drops us into a dark sweaty nightclub with this awesome tune blaring across moodily lit posers frugging away while some cops do inscrutable cop stuff. I think it's the clash between the strangely feminine vocal whines of Linkin Park and the no-nonsense maleness of Jay-Z that tickles me most.
