Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary by Jack Halpern

I have quickly found this book to be an almost indispensable reference when encountering new kanji. I wasn't an initial fan of the 'SKIP' system it uses to find kanji, but I very quickly got the hang of it, and now much prefer it as a lookup system than the traditional by-radical then-stroke-count method. Just count the number of strokes on one side, then the number of strokes on the other, and look up that number - simple!

That being said, it's not a comprehensive dictionary. For more esoteric words or kanji, you'll still need to refer to something more complete such as the Nelson dictionary, but this book does succeed in doing precisely what it says: providing a quick… Read more

First of all, let's get this out of the way: this is without a doubt an excellent course in modern Japanese. However, it is not aimed at the casual student, nor - for that matter - is it aimed at the home-learner. To use this book successfully at home, you will need to buy or borrow supplementary material; in particular a Japanese character… Read more

I'm not sure that I like the direction that Appleseed Ex Machina is demonstrating in the world of anime. The CG graphics are too blatant, occasionally making the film look like the starting sequence from a computer game as opposed to an animated film. Most off-putting for me, however, was that the DVD I purchased has no Japanese audio - you're limited to English or German. This is a personal bug-bear of mine: If I buy a foreign language film, I really want to watch it in the language it was originally written in! As much as anything else, dubbed lip-synching is terribly distracting!

So for me, it's not a terribly compelling film. It's over-polished looks were sometimes… Read more
