Its a great title and the opening sequences give hope that it may actually go somewhere but without giving too much away it just really drags, the author makes a very slight story go a long way, the characters act in ways that aren't very believable, the writing and the imagery is repetitive to a "sledgehammer degree" and by the end I was just glad to finish. This is the only Ellory I've read but he does get great reviews, although I have heard he writes most of them himself.

It is a truly compelling read, the characters are so well drawn you even manage to feel sympathy for Robespierre, whilst for Danton and Camille nothing less than hopeless dread. What a truly wonderful book. The machinations of court life during the ascendancy of Thomas Cromwell are beautifully and movingly written. The dialogue is crisp and elegant and keeps the story moving along at a great pace. Her descriptive powers are almost hallucinatory in their power and her wit is I think as sharp as anyone writing today. I can't wait for the sequel.
