From knights to Squires. The Gentry & Peerage of T&hellip by Graham A.: Darbyshire
I was interested in this book as I'd hoped it would tell me a little more about the individuals who fought at Towton and their motivations for fighting there and why, particularly the lesser figures. Like all Freezywater books its in a paperback booklet form in softcover 56 pages long, A5 format and I bought it for £9, which is a little expensive considering what you get. This didn't deter me from buying it as in the past I've found Freezywater publications to contain 'gems' I have not read anywhere else and I would consider myself pretty well read in respect of the Wars of the Roses.

Although the title states, Lancaster & York, the Wars of the Roses, the book covers the later stages of the Hundred years war and the first part of the Wars of the Roses, effectively the reign of Henry VI i.e to 1471. The final stages of the Wars i.e Richard III, Bosworth etc are not covered. It focuses more on providing a good clear explanation of the political elements rather than the military detail. It is written in a highly readable style unencumbered by footnotes, closer in style to a historical novel than an academic history, similar to Paul Murray Kendall's works on the Wars of the Roses.

Positives
1. Easy highly readable style and simple narrative.
2. Focuses… Read more

We play this regularly with our 6 year old and she can play this competitively with the adults, albeit with the aid of a small handicap. Whilst its simple enough for her, there is still a good degree of depth for adult players. The pieces are beautifully produced with lovely artwork and made of stout card.

The game basically involves you building your own Alhambra palace around a central fountain, by buying building tiles with four different colored… Read more
