Strange Meeting by Susan Hill
Strange Meeting by Susan Hill
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, 3 July 2014
I wasn't expecting this story from Hill. I have read King of the Castle and The Woman in Black, and both were such dark stories, that I wasn't really sure I was meant to read her books - preferring generally something less sinister.

This, however, is a beautiful, quiet, and moving story. A World War 1 story seen, through the eyes of Barton and Hilliard.

I learnt more of what it may have been like than from much of what I have already seen and read.

See what you think, but I love Hill's light but brilliant touch

I really did not want this to end. It may be a collection of letters rather than a story, but this is the charm of it. Feel like I know all the characters and could pop round and sit at the table with Alan Bennett, Will, Sam, MK and Nina. I am very sad the book has come to an end, think I'll just read it again...!

I didn't expect this to finish like it did. Wow.

I love books where the style, though unusual, adds a poetry and resonance to the words. Cady may be unreliable, narrator-wise- but her words and thoughts are true. It's a good book - read it.
