An excellent read. Well written and full of clever, interesting ideas. I tend not to read short stories but these are well worth it.

You'll like this book if you like Stephen King novels (in particular, The Stand, which I thought I was re-reading at first), or if you enjoy films in which the hero defuses a bomb in the last second.

You probably won't be so keen if you find it hard to suspend your disbelief of concepts such as the supernatural, fortune-telling, God, good versus evil, etc. Or if you don't like clichés.

If you think this is going to be a science fiction novel (like I did - as it's in the sci-fi category on Amazon!) then be warned - there's not much science in it (see 'concepts such as ...' above). An exception being the descriptions of nuclear war, which are excellently… Read more

This book certainly would make a good present for a crossword-loving friend or family member. With its tasteful cover and erudite subject this is perfect for a coffee table. However, I also recommend reading it! It's good: well-written, fun and informative. It is also challenging - but it's up to you how challenging you want to make it. Some chapters I read quickly, others in detail - poring over sentences and not moving on until I understood them fully and had solved their clues. And there are lots of clues in this book.
