As a relatively inexperienced Birdwatcher I have tried (with varying success) to find a good field guide - generally speaking the Collins guide (Mullarney, Svensson et al) is by far the best as far as a very high quality book with a standard approach goes; however this book is something which I think is quite unique. Firstly by identifying different behaviours it allows you to search for that unknown bird in a very different way, secondly instead of stumbling around different plumages, it actively encourages you to look at what the bird is doing. For a highly informative guide with beautiful illustrations of larval stages, male and female butterflies, distribution maps and highly readable text you should look no further. I'm by no means an expert and this suited me perfectly. I daresay those more familiar through to fully fledged lepidopterists will find something here.

On the whole I totally agree with the 5 star reviews I have already read so I'm not going to repeat what others have accurately described. I have used it regularly since buying it and it is handy, pocket sized and comprehensive.
Now the BUT... it might seem like only a small thing but there are no distribution maps which can be clincher's in identifying troublesome birds when you're out and about (at least while you are relatively new to birdwatching, although I would suggest this is essential long-term).

The Collins guide mentioned in other reviews has the maps and more detailed descriptions, BUT it is not so 'pocket'-sized, I suppose to fit into so neat and durable a book… Read more
