This was exactly what I needed when I read it. I like retro, 'trope' stories - they're classics for a REASON after all! The author delivers a fun, deft and polished story that has you grinning every other page and laughing each chapter. The characters are a little too good to be true in places but overall they are masterfully portrayed and well rounded and it's truly a delight to watch the story and their relationship unfold. This novella is enthralling from the first sentance to the last. I started the book with high expectations anyway due to the cultural heritage of the female main character and to find them not only matched but surpassed was a wonderful surprise. The world building is careful and detailed without ever straying into the path of careless info dumping and the characters themselves are beautifully well-rounded and crafted, individual voices and characteristics highlighted and explained in an outstanding example of how to write in this genre and write well. The narrative voice is crisp and concise and the flow of the book is just a joy to read. I cannot stress enough how much I enjoyed this… Read more
