A very illuminating book that helped me acknowledge my daughter's emotions and feelings. It equipped me with the language to guide my daughter through playground behaviour and better understand the issues that lie ahead. There are also some excellent suggestions on how to create a secure and healthy home environment around food, TV and media. Society today puts a lot of pressure on young girls and the message we give our daughters today needs to be clear, confident and reassuring.

I read this together with my seven year old son. It thoroughly captured our imagination and took us on a wonderful adventure through Phillip Pulman's world of daemons, parallel universes, armoured bears, ancient witches and magic. We lived and breathed His Dark Materials over the course of a few months and it brought us closer as we discussed the relationships between Lyra and her daemon and how wonderful it would be to have one ourselves. We fell in love with Pan and the whole world became real to us in the months that we read it. I agree with some of the other reviews that there are very dark, almost disturbing, parts to the trilogy that affected me deeply but not my son who was too young… Read more
