This disc is clearly a labour of love by the Artistic director of the Orchestre National de Jazz, Daniel Yvinec, who has captured Robert Wyatt's genius and placed it in a new setting. Guest vocalists Rokia Traore, Yael Naim, Camille and Wyatt himself each bring a distinct vocal phrasing to the songs but ti is the synergy between these singers and the instrumental soloists that bring each track to life. Highlights include "Just as you are" and the superb "Del Mondo" with Irene Jacob providing distorted words counterpointing Mathieu Metzger's solo. It is rare to find originality in a set of covers but this is a very different kind of disc, beautiful and intriguing and exposing the true… Read more

What an album! Not since the Beat Farmers have such outrageously hilarious scatological and poetic (ina Crazy Jane sense) lyrics graced a rock album. The stories recounted include the tale of "Aloysius, Bluegrass drummer" who fell in with a woman addicted to fat (hydrogenated) and the bizarre tale of "San Franciso BC" involving a murder, a bad haircut, a jewel thief, an encounter with a glass coffee table and some unrequited love! The "Party Barge" concludes with "Send us your co-ordinates, we'll send a Saint Bernard". Squirrels float in and out of songs like ciphers and the whole glorious ensemble is rounded out by some great playing and the vocal harmonies of DC and Cassie Berman. Album… Read more

Although these guys have adopted the hairy bearded look of the Band and occasionally sound Dylanesque they stamp their own identity firmly on this disc - a set of 15 songs without a dud to be found. Tales of the old and new West predominate as evoked in titles like Frankie's Gun, Whiskey in my Whiskey and Helen Fry. In a strange way the sound evokes not just alt-country legends like Green on Red but also the swirling organ and heavy back beat of the Wailers at their best. This is an outstanding collection which rewards repeated listening.
