Reasonable conclusion to an at times excellent trilogy. It feels a little like Howey is just running out of steam by the end. A couple of neat little twists, but generally it's fairly predictable as the series ambles to a conclusion. Entertaining enough, but still I can't help feeling that some of the earlier promise has gone unfulfilled.
The Last Dark (The Last Chronicles of Thomas Coven&hellip by Stephen Donaldson
Like an A list Hollywood director Stephen Donaldson has become over-indulged by his editors and publisher. The final instalment of the TC series has become flabby in the extreme. Entire chapters of naval gazing, where once there was tight dialogue and real emotion. For the first half the book plods along with a sense of doom and gloom, but with little real sense of jeapordy. The enemy's have just grown too big but there's always an out, whether it's white gold or some strange contrivance. It never feels 'real' in the way that the earlier two trilogies managed in making the extra-ordinary believable.

Not bad, not good, not gripping, not boring, just ho hum. Left with the feeling that I really couldn't care less about the main character but a vague interest in how it was all going to turn out just kept me going till the end. Very middle middle'ing.
