Penny Red: Notes from the New Age of Dissent by Laurie Penny

Read this now, because it is about now! And follow Laurie Penny on her blog, twitter; whatever and wherever you can if you want to get an articulate, authentic and inside view of current dissatisfactions with government, capitalism, policing and feminism - just for starters. If you're young (or not, like me) you will find her writing compelling and inspiring; not only reporting from the front line of the current activism but also educating by putting her views in a context that is grounded in wide reading. Emphatically for 'the people' or to paraphrase her and UK uncut (chapter 5, 'Our Society's Bigger Than Yours' : ' The real big society'.
The Staffordshire Oatcake: A History by Pamela Sambrook

5.0 out of 5 stars Staffordshire Oatcakes, 21 Nov 2011
Great to find a local history book that is so well written and researched. It goes well beyond a simple compilation of local, collected stories (and myths) about The Oatcake. Instead it looks at historical evidence of its origins in Staffordshire moorland life, why oats were used locally as a significant staple food and even how the 'bake-stone' as a method of cooking is linked to place names. It then comes up to date with recent developments, recipes and a list of local Oatcake shops still in business.
Well illustrated with additional page notes that make it a good browse too. Excellent.
John Martyn: Grace & Danger by Lee Barry

"For each triumph there comes a price that Martyn has took on the chin, time and again." Just twelve lines into the first paragraph of chapter one and I knew that this book was not fit to be a published biography. Why squander all the evident research and compilation by failing to get it proof-read, edited and rewritten. Sadly, an unfitting tribute to JM.
