Maidens' Trip by Emma Smith

An escape into another world, a fleeting glimpse of a vanished life. Fun and seriousness, adventure and graft. I'd been meaning to read this book for a long time and finally got a hardback copy having grown tired of waiting for its paperback reissue. A delight from start to finish, peopled with wonderful characters. It's done in a semi-fictionalised way, with her memoirs and those of others rearranged into one round trip; while I had reservations about this it works very well. Her writing style is a joy - quirky, cheeky, astute, with brevity yet depth.

Ignore the hype, forget the backlash. This is gripping, intelligent prose, pacy action and vast scope. Classic mythology reborn, a very scientific approach to imaginary world building, and a very human insightfulness to its weird, dark musings. A believable love-to-hate uber villain who could become the equal of Robin Hobb's Regal and a diverse ensemble cast. Only the Jeryd sections fell behind the others for me, although they came together nicely at the end. Great start, pleasing conclusion, lots set up for future volumes. The names Wolfe and Abercrombie get mentioned in comparison and with good reason. Think Mieville, Le Guin, Eriksson, and Michael Coney too - lofty company indeed.

This album gets so little kudos compared to her other '80s records Roses in the Snow and The Ballad of Sally Rose, something that mystifies me. Cimarron destroys even those worthy efforts. It is the perfect mixture of uplifting, sad, haunting, rollicking, and is beautiful all the way through. Songs from diverse sources all sound like they were written for this album. To pick highlights or comment on individual tracks seems churlish. Under the right listening mood, each song seems a whole story, a whole life, and each one puts you further under the… Read more
