At times clumsy plot line, predictable ending. A rehash of the first two books using discarded plot lines?

Falls some way below the standard set by the first two books.
A Song of Ice and Fire (1) - A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin
Great characterisation and plot; griping from start to finish.
Proof reading could be more diligent in places.
Obviously not written against a deadline!

Falls some way short of Mr Cornwell's own very high standard. I don't wish to reiterate those critiscisms made by others, all very valid imo. I think my initial deep sense of disapointment on reaching the final page was caused by the weak ending. The final part 'Death In Winter' really let's the story down.

Uhtreds feelings [ does the character still have feelings?] for and relationship with Aethelflaed is almost non existant. As a subplot this could have so easily have enriched the story and brought the characters to life, drawing the reader back in time to the seventh century as in previous books.
