It is a shame that the books of Lawrence Block are typically found in the crime section of the bookshop. He is first and foremost an author of exquisite touch, yet one who happens to use the crime genre to communicate his views on friendship, relationships and the trials encountered in our lives. I have never been an alcoholic but Block's depiction of Scudder's life before and after acknowledging his alcoholism ranks as some of the most moving, and finally triumphant writing I have ever read. Oh and incidentally the story is good too!!
