Of all the many books I have read about Philby this one by Ben Macintyre is by far the best. It is a searing indictment of the British Security Services and their misplaced faith in the "old boy network". The recent two-part television series while being interesting did not compare with the brilliance of Macintyre's book.

I was recommended this book by a relation of the author so, one could say, I was naturally predisposed to like it. Having said that the story of a family-owned silk factory is not my natural choice of reading. But, having got into it I found it a fascinating chronicle of a period I remember well, growing up in the country as a child during World War 2. The book captures the period to perfection, the rationing, the dangers, and the tragedies of people going missing or being killed. There is a strong, and quite steamy, love interest too.
