The Defence of Duffer's Drift by E.D. Swinton
I recently bought this.
I thoroughly enjoyed every page!.
With the 'Groundhog day-esque' quality and the sheer depth, I found it an easy to read but thought-provoking book.

There was an attempt at a modern version (the defence of hill 781) which was similar in some ways though far removed from the simplicity of Duffers Drift.

Whether you are a military enthusiast, serving officer or just an avid reader, this book will not disappoint!.

Packed with tools, firefox addons and various utilities recommended in the lessons (all on disc), this book got me off to a great start. The only problem I found was at the end of the first book (HTML) it stopped giving the 'guided tutorials' and instead just proceeded to show me different things I could do without explaining exactly how.

The few examples it did display the code for, it did try to explain what the code meant but in my opinion, it jumped to quickly from the holding-your-hand-while-you-learn stage to the this-is-what-you-can-do-when-you-know-what-you're-doing stage almost instantly, leaving me feeling a bit lost, like i'm waiting for the next example to follow… Read more

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this, ordering it a day or so after it came out.
The whole book was finished in a couple of days of moderate reading (a half hour here and there) and although it was a great story, it did feel kind of 'rushed'.
It may just be me, but the story seemed to end just as it was really getting started.

Which was a shame as I feel that there was a lot of wasted potential there, the Star Wars universe was only touched on, but never went into any deeper context other than just being a vague background with a few familiar terms thrown in (Races, Factions etc..) at times, it did feel as if this story could be set anywhere in any setting… Read more
