Airdyne is the best device for HIIT training. Tabata protocol was originally carried out on first generation Airdynes. Proper Tabata style HIIT is one of the most challenging workouts you can do. The faster you cycle, the higher the resistance, so (after 5minutes of warm up) you do 20 seconds max effort followed by 10 seconds of coasting. Repeat this sprint and coast as many times as you can. Typically, first time you try you'll be able to do 2 or 3 such cycles before collapsing to the floor.
