Original Album Series ~ Bonnie Raitt
Original Album Series ~ Bonnie Raitt
Bonnie Raitt always had a great and individual voice and it is shown off to marvellous effect on Streetlights and Sweet Forgiveness. These are definitely the outstanding albums of the 5 on offer here, where she is allowed to show her blues and folk roots. But I get the feeling the record company wanted to groom her as a pop singer and the material and production values on the other albums reflect this. As do the truly awful covers! Poor Bonnie must have cringed at the outfits and poses she was forced into. So, a few duff albums but 2 very good ones that certainly make the series good value.

Not quite the vivid mixture of fact and fiction that made Samarkand so wonderful in my eyes. It inhabits the same territory of trying to bring the past to life, and is particularly useful at trying to explain a complex period of Islamic history to western readership, but the strictly linear, chronological narrative becomes rather limiting and tiresome. A good read nevertheless.

marvellous, gutsy and full of character. Vintage recordings but with more presence than any amount of modern digital efforts, and at a giveaway price for some of the greatest cello works of the century. Buy
