5.0 out of 5 stars A true classic!, 7 Oct 2000
Having seen the video many times, I didn't dee the point in reading it. But having been convinced, once I had started I couldn't put it down! The characters seem so real, and are seen in a different light than in the video, it seemed like a whole new story.

A must read for adults and children alike, who have seen the film before, or not.

I rate it 11/10.

An enthralling book about the life of a boy, accidently caught in a world of smuggling. A relationship is made between the reader and the main characters, which Faulkner does very well. Even though things continually go wrong, the usual happy ending is timed to perfection.

A great read, for anyone who likes adventure. A favourite with English teachers, as I found out at school, but worth reading again, even if you did read it many moons ago.

A story about a 15 year old boy, from a very poor background and broken home, which shows the reality and harshness of life.

Billy (the main character) has to learn about life the hard way, through bullies at school, (not just other pupils) and a family who just doesn't care.

He finds comfort in one thing, a kestrel named Kes. He trained her from a fledgling, and it is the only thing he cares about. His life revolves around her, and when he is with her, his troubles disappear...

A great book, which is hard to put down. The relationship between the reader and Billy, Barry Hines creates is amazing. An excelent choice for everyone.
