I downloaded this book as my husband's 2x Great Uncles were "members" of the Ransley Gang - Richard and William Wyor who were transported with others of the gang to Van Diemans Land in 1827. I was looking forward to reading a novel based on historical evidence about the gang but was appalled to read that Richard and William (in her view)were rapists and that William (in the novel called Billy) was a murderer who bludgeoned an 80 year old woman to death for the sheer pleasure of it. I enjoyed the Illegal Gardener so much I quickly ordered the second book in the series - I am so glad I did. I could not put it down, the descriptions of the island, village and characters was brilliant. The twist regarding Eleni's love life was a surprise as it was to her mother Marina, however I felt that the end was a bit rushed and it would have been nice to have learnt how and why Marina's son was taken in by his adopted parents.

A story about Meli would be interesting - what happened to him after his meeting with Marina!!

When I first started the story I found the writing style very different from what I had read before - more like a school composition than a novel. However, after a couple of chapters I really got into the story - Sara Alexi's descriptive writing really helps you visualise the Greek village, the main character Juliet's home and the feelings that grow between her and her illegal gardener.

I could not put the book down - a great read
