You can open this book up just about anywhere and find something funny and fascinating on each page. I devoured it in one go, but it also makes great bedtime reading to dip into as and when. Living near one of the events (cheese rolling), I can vouch for what the author says about it--though I have to admit there were aspects that even I didn't know about! A definite must-read if you're interested in the 'real' Britain.
The New Journalism (Picador Books) by Tom Wolfe

Even though this book is 'old' it still feels new and as relevant as ever. Not only does it pick the best of the greats, it also includes intros by Tom Wolfe to each excerpt, highlighting the novel bits. My favourite chapters are the ones from Hunter S. Thompson (before he fell headlong into gonzo writing) and, of course, Wolfe himself. Essential reading.
