A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4) by George R. R. Martin
This book is an astonishing achievement. Almost a thousand pages in which nothing actually happens. That's quite something.

The contrast with the earlier books of the series is dramatic. Those were full of plot and surprises and action and fantastic characters, real page-turners.

Quite how the series has become so horribly bogged down we can only surmise. My guess is that Martin has become so important and valuable to his publisher that they no longer feel able to force him to accept the sort of ruthless editing which fantasy epics often require to prevent their becoming weighed down by their own complexity. This book is the second part of a trilogy, the first being "Devices and Desires" and the third (out imminently in paperback) being "The Escapement". I have just devoured the first two books almost without pause, including some very late nights, which seems to suggest I really enjoyed them, but I'm still not quite sure if I did or not.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs, 21 Mar 2006
This is a dreadful program - Symantec should be utterly ashamed for releasing it. My system slowed to such a crawl that I was unable to work and web browsing was impossible - NIS scans the entire contents of the browser temp directory every time a page is loaded. At one point it was taking nearly 2 minutes for a single page to load over my 2.2MB adsl connection.
Other delights - e-mail scanning cannot be switched off, even if you uncheck the relevant options, which in my case meant waiting 20mins for it to scan one large e-mail, which froze the system and caused the e-mail not to be sent at all.
Most of the options which existed in previous releases have been taken out, so the… Read more
