3.0 out of 5 stars Anachronism, 31 July 2014
How could a children's novel set in the early 1900's have been published in 1964? It seems such an anachronism....not really long enough an interval to have historic value. Unfortunately the attitude of the author is typical of her period (it may well have been written long before it was published) with one or two stereotypes, but the flow of the plot is good, and there are good lessons to be drawn about children having to revise their first impressions of people. Not a book I would chose to give young children today, but it is one I would have enjoyed myself had I stumbled across it earlier in my life.

The furnishings and decorations are accurate, and the costumes are spot-on, and at times breathtaking. The acting is amazing, a very high standard, and the actors are blessed with a wonderful script by Simon Raven who as an… Read more
"Archers" Book of Farming and the Countryside by Anthony Parkin
I read a library copy of this in the 1990's when it was relatively new, and I managed to fill in the gaps of knowledge that I had despite having been a faithful Archers listener since 1968. With the new set of plots on the serial which feature agri-business issues, I wanted to update myself. It is a valuable guide and also serves as a snapshot of what was going on in farming at the time it was written. A new version is needed, but it stands up for itself.
